Season 4 2024

Summer has always been a little slower for TOPL with lots of people out on vacation, but we still had a dedicated crew that made it out all summer to finish our fourth season of the year. First off, thanks to Mike for hosting playoffs this season.

The A division finals were closely matched, with one 3 way tiebreaker to make it into the final four. In the end, David Cowling came out on top with a decisive victory on Hobbit, and a close game of Volley. Chris came in 2nd, Laura came in 3rd, and Dave Glen took 4th. This is on top of Laura not only qualifying 1st in the playoffs, but finishing 1st in the regular season, and winning most improved. Congratulations to David and Laura for a great tournament!

In the B division, Andrew took 1st, Scott 2nd, Mike 3rd, and Brian 4th.

And with that, another season is done, but the next one is starting right away. Next Monday Sept 23rd the 5th TOPL season of the year starts at Nick’s place-hope to see everyone there!

Season 3 2024

The seasons come fast and furious now, with our third season under the new format wrapping up last night. Big thanks to Jim for hosting us last night, and keeping everyone cool in his great collection.

Chris and Laura tied for the season championship, and as you can tell they might not want to share the trophy 🙂

Laura also took home most improved, capping off a great season for her, so congratulations Laura!

In the A division finals, Chris came 1st, Myles 2nd, Laura 3rd, and Joe 4th after an amazing qualifying run.

In the B division, Dave Glen took home the new(ish) B trophy, Joey took 2nd, Jim 3rd, and John 4th.

Thanks to everyone for another great season of pinball! Next week we start it all over again at Mike’s place. New members are always welcome, and it’s a great way to play a bunch of pinball every week with some great people.

Season 2 2024

Another season is in the books! Thanks to Nick for hosting us for playoffs last night, and to Myles for dealing with all of the food again. For the A division, John Z ended up winning the finals, with Mike in 2nd, Chris in 3rd, and Myles in 4th. Chris also won the Season Champ trophy, and Myles won Most Improved:

In the B division, Josh took the newly created (and still to be slightly redesigned) B division trophy, with Terry in 2nd, Dave in 3rd, and John W in 4th:

Based on everyone’s feedback, we’re going to keep up with the new season/playoff format for the time being, which means our next season runs from May 6 to Jul 8. Hope to see everyone out at Jim’s place on Monday!

Season 1 2024

Last night we finished off the first season of 2024 under the new format, and it was a huge success. Thanks to the crew at Player One for hosting us! Brian continued to dominate after winning the regular season, and also took a playoff win:

Rounding out the top four were George, Gary and Dave. Speaking of Dave, he also takes home the most improved and handicap trophies:

In the B division David C took first, followed by Terry, Luch, and Max.

Hopefully everyone enjoyed the new season format-we actually had a really solid turnout for the season, and most people that joined played almost every week. The new season starts next Monday March 11 at Nick’s place-hope to see everyone there!

Changes for the new season starting Monday Jan 8

Hey everyone, as we mentioned at the playoffs, Myles, Mike and I have been looking at your feedback about the length of the season, and we’ve come up with some changes that we’d like to pilot.  The short version is that we’re changing the season from 13 weeks to 7, and keeping the playoffs at the end.  League fees, trophies, playoff food etc all stay the same, and we’re still playing 5 games per night.  We’ll be dropping the lowest 2 weeks (out of 7) instead of 3 (out of 13).

Playoffs are also going to change a bit.  For A division, we’re going to take the season standings (best 5/7 weeks) and take the top 8 players into the A division finals.  Any tiebreakers for the top 8 will be worked out on a single game at the start of the tournament (game chosen at random).  A division finals will be a 7 game, head to head, round robin matchplay, followed by a single elimination bracket for the top 4 players.  This is the same as what we did this past season, with the difference being that everyone will play everyone else once.  High seed will get game or order choice.  For everyone else, we’ll set up a matchplay tournament for B division that works the same as what we’ve done in the past (head to head match play for a set time, with a single elimination, best of 3, final four).

The plan is to run the first two 8 week blocks of 2024 this way, and then see how it’s working. As always, feel free to reach out with any feedback.  See everyone at Mike’s place on Monday!

End of Season-Fall 2023

Last night we had the playoffs for the Fall 2023 season. Going into the finals, Brian had won the season, but that just meant he had the advantages going into the final match play brackets. Things can change at playoffs though, and after a great run through match play rounds, Laura Edward finished in first place!

The final A division standings were:

  1. Laura Edward
  2. David Cowling
  3. Myles Cameron
  4. Doug Baird
  5. Brian Trenholm
  6. Chris Bardon
  7. Barry Brdar
  8. Gary Toste
  9. Walt Morose
  10. Dave Glen
  11. Mike Luciani
  12. Joe Bauman

Over in the B division, Jim Wilks dominated the bracket, and came out on top:

Final B division standings were:

  1. Jim Wilks
  2. Donna Wai
  3. George Pace
  4. Karl Braun
  5. John Zaharatos
  6. Jeff Hershberg
  7. Brian Sauve
  8. Josh Zilberberg
  9. Terry Melnyk
  10. John Woolsey
  11. Noel Hooper
  12. Mike Conrad
  13. Max Anshilevich

A huge thanks to the Maple pinball crew for hosting us last night, to Myles for handling all of the food, and to Mike for handling the cash and the trophies.

And finally, thanks to everyone who came out and played this year. 2023 has been a good year for TOPL, and we’re already looking at ways to make 2024 even better. Enjoy the holiday break, and we’ll see everyone back on Jan 8th!

Summer 2023 Playoffs

Another TOPL season is in the books. Thanks to everyone who made it out over the summer, and thanks to Kim for hosting the playoffs on Monday.

First off, congratulations to Barry for winning the regular season, and qualifying as the top seed for the playoffs.

Also, congratulations to Brian for winning Most Improved:

In the A division, Shane took first, Laura finished second, Myles in 3rd, and Mike in 4th.

Laura ALSO took home the handicap trophy after a fantastic run over the season.

Over in the B division, Josh took first, Jim took 2nd, Kim took 3rd, and Terry took 4th.

Overall it was a great night of pinball, and a great summer season. We’re off on a bit of a break for the end of the summer, but we’ll be back with the new season starting September 11. Hope to see everyone there for a new season!

Jerry Power’s retirement party

Jerry Power from Player One has been a huge help to the local pinball community over the years. He’s brought games out to launch parties, tournaments, and hosted events at the P1AG showrooms, not to mention making sure that the locals have a steady stream of new games to enjoy. Jerry is retiring at the end of the month, so we threw him a retirement party at Maple last Friday. Myles and Shane organized a huge event, and the turnout was pretty impressive:

Thanks to Jerry for an incredible 48 years of service to the pinball community!
